The smartphone has a cover display that measures 3.4 inches and uses the Flex Window user interface. Similar to the WearOS-based Galaxy Watch series, the interface can be customized, supports widgets, and uses gesture navigation. The 2023 flip-style foldable also features an improved hinge system called Flex Hinge in addition to the sizable cover display. It enables the phone to fold flat, which was not possible with earlier Flip series models. The 6.7-inch full HD+ panel with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate serves as the bendable display. A 10-megapixel camera sensor is located on the front, and two 12-megapixel camera sensors are located on the back. The phone is available with 256GB and 512GB of on-board storage, both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy system-on-chip.Both the 256GB and 512GB on-board storage models of the phone have 8GB of RAM. There is a 3,700 mAh battery inside the phone. The phone is IPX8-rated for protection and has Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back and cover.

Samsung’s latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Fold 5, have seen a surge in preorders, indicating growing consumer interest. In South Korea, more than 1 million preorders have been placed for these devices alone. While the new phones may not offer groundbreaking features compared to their predecessors, they have managed to capture the attention of Samsung fans.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5, with its “Flex Window” feature, has accounted for 70% of the preorders, surpassing the popularity of the Z Flip 4. This suggests that the demand for foldable phones is increasing among consumers.

It is important to note that folding smartphones have remained niche products until now. However, Samsung’s success in this market may encourage other manufacturers, like Google, to explore similar devices. Although foldable phones may not overtake traditional smartphones in terms of popularity, their presence in the market is likely to become more prominent.

While precise preorder numbers from other regions are not available yet, Samsung has mentioned that foldable phones account for about 20% of its smartphone sales worldwide. This indicates a significant market share for foldable phones beyond South Korea.

The positive response to Samsung’s new foldable phones bodes well for the future of this technology. As more consumers embrace the concept of foldable devices, we can expect to see an increase in their availability and variety in the market. Although they may not replace traditional smartphones entirely, the popularity of foldable phones is set to rise.
