Best Apps to Compress Videos on Android

Imagine you shot a 500 MB video on your Android phone and want to share it with your family or friends, but you only have 150 MB left on your data plan. How will you deliver it to them now? One method is to reduce the video's size through compression before sharing it.On the Play Store, there are numerous apps that let you compress videos. Here are the top Android apps for compressing videos that we could find. To test how much each app could reduce the size of a video while maintaining its quality, we shot a test video that was almost 500 MB in size.

Note- Before we start, it should be noted that compressing and decompressing videos are performance-intensive tasks that heavily rely on the Android phone's processor. Depending on the performance capabilities of your Android phone, the time it takes for compression to finish varies.

1. FFSHARE -

FF Share by caydey is the app for you if you're looking for a straightforward video compressor with excellent compression and minimal quality loss. It effectively accomplishes what it promises to do. During our testing, we found no advertisements in the app, which also supports a variety of video codecs and formats. The best part is that it is totally open-source and can be downloaded from GitHub, which is typically considered to be secure.

Tip: FFShare does not save the compressed video to your Android phone by                default but you can opt for Upload to Photos in the share menu to save the                compressed video.

We tested the compression with a 1-minute long 4K 60fps video of size 466 MB and it was compressed to 196 MB while maintaining the 4K resolution. If you opt for Full HD resolution, then the size can be reduced to around 100 MB in size.

        Pros
  • No Ads
  • Open-source and free-to-use
        Cons
  • Compression might take a bit of time depending on your Android phone.
  • The app needs to be open at all times during the compression process, if you close it then compression will stop and you’d need to redo the process.
Download FFShare from GitHub.

2. Video Converter

The Video Converter app offers a wide range of options, including the ability to alter the video codec, video and audio bitrates, subtitles and audio additions and deletions, and frame rates. Even though the app contains advertisements, you can get around them or pay for the premium version for an ad-free experience.
Although some options were only available in the pro version, the free version of this app performed the compression fairly quickly.

The same 466MB 4K 60fps video file that we used to test the app was compressed to about 281MB when 4K resolution was selected, and to 140MB when Full HD resolution was selected.

Pros

  • Multiple video editing features are available like trim, merge, etc.
  • Audio editing can also be done with this app.

Cons

  • Banner and pop-up ads.
  • Cannot compress the video to a custom resolution without buying the premium plan.
Download Video Converter.
